I thought I would share my 2 inspiration boards and my candy shelf ;) Since my inspiration can also come from other things.

Hola,

My name is Whitney & my perfect world would revolve around fine art and brownies. I live in Seattle, Washington also known as the greatest place to live in the United States. I'm from a dinky town in the panhandle of Florida and fairly recently made a rather successful get-away with nothing but a suitcase of clothing and art supplies.

I just finished my stint at community college leaving gladly with an Associates Degree. I'm applying to a couple schools reluctantly (I loathe school) while taking a year off to travel, save some cash, make art, and breathe. I refuse to do anything for a living that isn't based on art. I preferably would like to open up a store and host local artists as well as my own art, and also freelance illustrate; a girl can dream.

I work mainly with pastels, charcoal, and oil paint. I recently started playing with prismacolor markers which are quite addictive. My subject is normally the female figure, and I also like to draw animals and buildings. I don't know, I'm all over the place, really.

Since I was in elementary school, I said I was going to be a writer and I was going to move to Seattle. Once I realized I was living by this single rigid plan for over a decade, I decided I wanted to atleast try art since my entire family here either got their degree in Graphic Design or Fine Arts. I figured I'd take a couple writing classes and a couple art classes and compare how I felt about each and I pretty much fell head over heels for the smell of oil paint and turpentine, and simply creating something emotionally provocative out of basically nothing. And I can do that with writing, but not as well as I can with visual art, and its not as rewarding so I'm sticking with this new path and seeing where its going to take me with high hopes and a pinch of doubt.

As far as interests go, I like dogs, japanese food, knitting, writing, coffee, This American Life, really fantastic music:(Explosions in the Sky, Animal Collective, Why?, Metric, Okkervil River, Neutral Milk Hotel, CocoRosie, Mirah, Broken Social Scene, Andrew Bird, Mono, Architecture in Helsinki, Stars, Joanna Newsom, Cat Power, The National...etc) Movies! I love movies: (White Oleander, Trainspotting, Amelie, Half Nelson, Pay it Forward, The Science of Sleep, Interview with the Vampire, Lost in Translation, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, American Beauty, The Sixth Sense, and basically every John Hughes movie ever made). I started boycotting television a few years ago, but I admittedly love the hell out of Six Feet Under...What else? Delicious food. I'm Italian and my family owns a handful of restaurants in Seattle so I'm kind of a food snob. I also enjoy traveling, although I've never been out of the states, sadly.

Here's a few of my most recent crap. I'm still learning, as we all are:

Hi, everyone. I'm Emily, 17 years old. I'm a senior at a competitive high school. Not sure where I'm going to college next year yet though. [honestly, i'm still not done sending out applications x.x ]

Writing is my main art form. The large majority of it is journalistic, almost essay style, of me stating beliefs or thoughts on the things going on around me. I do write poetry and have attempted National Novel Writing Month. I love reading, having intense religious/philosophical discussions with people, running, snow&winter, christmas trees, wheat-thins, sitting on roofs to look at the stars, naps, tea, being backstage...and a lot of other things that I'm forgetting right now.

I hate people who are closed-minded, who follow religion blindly(I'm not saying that following a religion is bad. i just don't like it when people don't really think about what they believe in), people who are not accepting and tolerant of other beliefs and ways of life.

I've only heard about a "candy wall" recently from my creative writing teacher. But I'm worried about what will happen once I go to college and the candy wall is at home.

Oh, and once I get my wall started, I'd love to do a swap! I also love getting new friends, so feel free to add me if you think we have some things in common.

I'm Ashley, seventeen years of age. Work & my boyfriend Aaron are my life. We've been together for almost two years. I work full time at a grocery store, which can be very tiring & stressful.

Tomorrow I plan to buy a poster board to start my wall or possibly just start putting things up in my room. I've always liked art, but mainly collages. I think the only reason why my art isn't always at it's best is because I rush and never have a clear idea of the outcome. I hope to change that & take time with this project. This piece is probably one of the best things that I've done on paper.

I really like video games, music nobody listens to, & weird movies. Photography has been my main outlet since I was 13. I have a great eye for things, just unsure of how to deliver.

I love this community & the concept. I would love to trade, but not so much right now because time is limited when I work so much. Some weeks I'll get a whole 40 hours and somtimes I'll only get 25 hours. It depends.

12/16/07 01:36 am - laviefantasque - Introduction

Hai, I'm Vief, a 20-year-old girl from the Netherlands [but moving to Belgium this week]. I am however raised in Dutch and French, went to a bilingual high school and so I can speak three languages fluently. I do have Viet-Namese family and I love traveling. I like complaining, since I am Dutch, but I love complaining about the Dutch the most.

I kind of see this place as a "happy box" or "emergency box". I am a recovering self-injurer [might as well put it as that] and when I have very strong urges to do something I shouldn't really be doing, I take out this little suitcase I have with a little journal, a candle, some incense and a notebook with encouraging words and list with "alternative coping mechanisms". In the 'world of si' people encourage others to send them things, mostly digitally but sometimes even through mail, to put in their emergency boxes. In the notebook I have glued things, pictures and words people sent me. It's a really great thing.

So, since I'm moving to my own place this week [well, hopefully!] I want to take part in this Wall of Candy thing and I will make a little place, or maybe just the whole of my house, an emergency-inspiration-box. I hope it'll work out!

Right now, I think of jr__nal as a main place for inspiration, I watch it everyday. But also certain music [mostly Tegan and Sara, and Deas Vail] really inspire me to create things.

I'm currently having an enormous photo-block [I study photography in GentGandGhentHent] and that's frustrating, but my letter-writing has improved a lot lately. As in, I decorate my letters a lot more now. It makes me very happy.

Apart from photography and writing, I love street art, literature, comics, film and body art. [Things I create myself are mostly photos, journal entries and letters, but also some canvasses, doodles, street art, stuffed animals and zines].
Obviously I love music too, I play the harp [haven't played since the summer, what with starting education and moving and all] but I seriously love all sorts of music. One of my favourite things to do is going to a concert or festival.

And my likes besides art are chai tea, the internet, muffins, sewing [I'm really into Lolita], sunny weather, hot chocolate, snow, family dinners, playing games, collecting My Little Pony, and Tamagotchi, bargain shopping, rooibos tea, bags, drop [licorice], obsessing, shoes, apple-and-kiwi-juice, dinokoekjes, reading fashion magazines, cheese, politics, rainbows, swimming, candles and incense.

I dislike rain, having to rush, trains that are late, losing money and people I can't understand. I mostly don't like to walk and rather take my bike but in Gent I find I don't mind walking too much. I do however dislike heavy bags and dropping my favourite objective.

My favourite film is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and my favourite novel is The Perks Of Being A Wallflower. My favourite city is Paris and my favourite language is French. My favourite font on the internet is Tahoma, my favourite font on the computer is the one I made myself. And my favourite objective is my 50mm 1.8 that I dropped.

I totally love being penpals [I have two regular ones at the moment] and sending out things, so don't be shy!

[And if you have an emergency box like I have, don't be shy to tell me either, I have some great things I would gratefully pass on.]

Hello everyone,

Let me start by saying that I am lookign forward to swapping with all of you.

My name is Kaatje aka Isis aka Daniel. I am 20 years old and I have been an art student since I was... 13. I am the only one in my family that is even remotely interested in art and culture. I have a very stereotypical family and I am the oddball. Something I am very gratefull for.

I live in a very small country that doesn't have a goverment at the moment ( we haven't had one for 200 days now lol).I love the city I live in and whould never trade it for anything. Not even london, paris or New York. I will always go back to Ghent.

I love fleamarkets, flyers, free postcards, black and whte pictures, fashion, magazines, zines, comics, books, erotic art ( yes I will not send people things like this unless they specificly say they like that kind of art and that they are not underage.)

My own art varies in style a lot. I love woking with darker colours and using different materials combined to make something. But on the other hand I am in love with AD markers so I can get colourfull at times as well.

I feel the most happy when I am turning the wheel of an etching press and see my work come to life on various prints. I love printmaking and I am not in a very elte and hard school where I take printmaking and graphic design but I hope after the judging moment I will get to take printmaking and illustration.

I love making sketchbooks since I learned how to bind books.

I am a very complicated person. I am a romantic soul that loves to fantasise as well as an overly realistic person.

Some of my dreams.

To distribute an actual zine worth reading. (I have a zine... not that good)
To write and illustrate my own chilrens book and see it in a library or bookshop.
To meet some of my penpals.
To show everyone that I am a somebody.
To find true love like they do in those lovely old movies.

.....

I love new friends and random talks....*hint*

Anything else you want to know... feel free to ask.

12/16/07 03:38 am - swish_n_flicker - Intorducing myself.

I have boring walls. Ew.
They aren't bare theres just hand prints and a couple of useless posters.
I like to be happy.
I'm also the sex on a keyboard.
I hope that this community grows so that I can send people things and they can
send me things and then we can all look at bulletin boards and be wooo purdy.
Colour is fantastic.
